Activate #5 Session Three
What is the purpose of today's program?
- To build self-awareness as a leader by looking at personal
values and the connection to leadership
- To investigate how values relate to teamwork and
- Listen to personal stories that reflect on how to live an
authentic life through knowing and being clear on your own
The clear purpose of this session is to find out what values
based leadership is. To help us get a better understanding of this
we have Rob Birch (Gforce) and Brad Clarke (Better Communities
Consulting) along for the ride.
Rob gets us underway with a brief recap of his working life,
starting as an apprentice in the aviation field through to his
current role with Gforce. Amazingly only ever having worked for two
employees his entire working life, showing amazing loyalty. Rob
also gave us an insight into his life outside of work, being
involved in many organisations, giving us the feeling that he is
very genuine about giving back to his community. One thing that
stuck with me was his focus on building "real" relationships, by
having open communication and being an active listener.
"If you simply adopt an organization's normative style, or try
to emulate someone else's style, your lack of authenticity will
show through. That's why you should find a leadership style that is
authentic to you and continue to refine it." GlobalEd. (A review
from Rob's "bible" True North by Bill George).
Andrew then introduced us to Brad, who broke the ice by giving
him a nice cuddle. Brad then got us thinking about what values are
and how certain values create leaders. He challenged us to look
within ourselves and question how our values aligned with our
employees. We then got involved in a chaotic game. Brad gave us all
some "rules" which were set up to create disorder. It certainly
challenged some of us and created more questions than answers.
On reflection, it showed us how the values of an organisation
can only be as good as the values of its leaders. These "leaders"
may not have a title but are the ones that create the path forward
by influencing others. Your values have meaning, when the time
comes, be the one to influence.
