Geelong getting on track

The Committee for Geelong welcomes news that the Victorian State Government will kick-start work on a high-speed rail link between Geelong and Melbourne, with detailed planning and technical investigations to determine a preferred option.  This fantastic investment of $50 million in the Victorian Budget 2018/19 for detailed investigations of fast rail infrastructure upgrades, costs and train requirements will pave the way for the development of a much anticipated business case.

The Committee's Geelong on Track paper, published in 2014, identified the importance of exploring a fast rail link between Geelong and Melbourne.  This paper also called for the development of a comprehensive, evidence-based, 25-50 year passenger and freight rail strategy to provide an adequate basis for transport planning.  This type of rail strategy would contain assessment and feasibility of a high-speed service to Melbourne, including electrification to Geelong along the existing rail corridor, as well as a new dedicated high speed rail alignment with new rolling stock.

This important announcement today indicates that the Victorian State Government is investing in planning work to consider the best way to deliver high-speed rail to Geelong as part of the Melbourne Airport Link.  The Committee for Geelong also hopes that this may also potentially include rail connectivity to Avalon Airport.

The Committee's international research report Winning from Second: what Geelong can learn from international second cities, published in November 2016, provides evidence of the catalytic change high speed rail connections can have on the way people live and work in cities and regions.  For Geelong to continue its transformation into a clever and creative city, it is vital to slash travel times between our city-region and Melbourne - and also have excellent connectivity to our State's two main airports.
