Driven to make a difference

The TAC first moved its headquarters to Geelong in 2009 and, as 2025 draws to a close, we are prouder than ever to be an important part of this great city and region. Most TAC employees proudly call it home. It’s a strong community spirit that we share, and we build on this by investing in community initiatives and events, to help build a culture that actively promotes safety on our roads.

When reflecting on what this year has meant for all of us in Geelong and across Victoria, the impact of road trauma is never far from my mind. Like many regions across the state, Geelong has felt the weight of this, with more lives lost on local roads this year than last. As someone who lives and works here, I too feel these losses personally and see how they ripple through our neighbourhoods, schools, and workplaces.

At the TAC we see ourselves as far more than just a major employer in Geelong; we are part of the fabric of this region. Our people are your neighbours, friends, and fellow commuters. We walk these streets, drive these roads, and see ourselves as road safety champions in this diverse and vibrant region, driven to make a difference in our lives outside of work.

Inside TAC, we work tirelessly as part of Victoria's Road Safety Partnership to reduce road trauma through education, engagement, innovation, policy advocacy, and investment in enforcement and infrastructure. But it takes all of us to make change happen.

Despite decades of progress, major issues persist: Speeding contributes to around 30 per cent of fatalities. Driving tired is a major risk factor, particularly in holiday periods, and contributes to up to 20 per cent of fatal crashes.

Around a quarter of drivers and passengers who die are not wearing seatbelts, and drink driving is a factor in around 16 per cent of lives lost. These are not just statistics – they represent real lives and choices that can change. Every decision behind the wheel matters.

How we can make a difference

·       Slow down: At just 5 km/h over the limit, crash risk rises by 50%

·       Buckle up: Seatbelts double your chance of surviving a crash even in modern vehicles

·       Rest up: Less than five hours’ sleep makes you four times more likely to crash

·       Separate drinking from driving: Plan ahead—use public transport, rideshare, or call a friend

As Victoria’s largest regional community, we can make a huge difference by advocating, talking to loved ones, and embedding a safety-first culture. As we reflect on this year, let’s honour those we’ve lost by making safe choices every day.

From all of us at the TAC, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and joyful festive season.
