In 2027, Invest in People

Recent plans for another major data centre near Geelong and NEXTDC’s purchase of 169 hectares at Lovely Banks have reignited discussion about housing, energy, infrastructure and economic growth.

But beneath those debates sits a bigger question: who will make the decisions, and how? AI can help us access information faster, but it can’t replace the people who have to weigh competing interests, bring others together and make decisions in the community’s long-term interest.

And that’s why, as organisations consider where to invest in 2027, I’d make the case for investing in people.

Applications are now open for Leaders for Geelong 2027, and we’re calling on employers across the region to back the next generation of leaders.

Geelong is fast becoming Victoria’s Capital of Good Growth, a region where prosperity, liveability and shared opportunity grow together. Good Growth into the future will continue to require leaders who can look beyond their own organisations, understand how their decisions affect others, build relationships across industries and sectors, and work together to deliver lasting benefits for our region.

Developing that sort of leadership has long been part of the Committee for Geelong’s work. In 2026, Leaders for Geelong celebrates its 20th year, with 742 alumni across the region. The year-long program brings people from different sectors together to better understand Geelong, develop relationships and work on community projects addressing real local challenges.

Research released this year found that 89 per cent of alumni had taken new leadership action after participating. Their collective contribution is estimated to have generated $17.9m in social value, positively affecting more than 46,000 people.

That’s a significant contribution to Geelong over two decades, and a reminder of what becomes possible when employers invest in developing people who are prepared to contribute beyond their day jobs.

As technology becomes more capable, the ability to exercise judgement, understand different perspectives and bring people together will only become more valuable.

So, as employers plan their investments for 2027, by all means invest in technology to improve productivity and create new opportunities. But don’t overlook the people who will be making the decisions about how we use it, and what sort of future we’re building.

If you have someone in your organisation who’s ready to contribute more, consider investing in their development through Leaders for Geelong.
