Geelong has always been a community that understands the importance of looking after each other.
As the NDIS moves through its next phase of reform, Geelong has an opportunity to show what genuine inclusion looks like in practice.
At its heart, the NDIS is about people. It was created to give people living with disability greater choice, control and the opportunity to live connected, meaningful lives in their communities. As reform continues, that principle must remain front and centre.
A strong and sustainable NDIS matters to participants, families, providers and the broader community. Quality, consistency and safeguards are essential if the NDIS is to deliver the outcomes people deserve, now and into the future.
But as the system changes, we need to be clear about what must be protected.
Community participation matters. Employment matters. Connection matters. The opportunity to build confidence, skills, relationships and independence matters.
genU is a national organisation with deep roots in Geelong. Across the Barwon region, Victoria and communities around Australia, genU supports people with disability through supported independent living, community participation, training, employment pathways, adventure programs and social enterprises.
Our focus is simple, helping people build skills, create connections and participate more fully in their communities.
That's inclusion in action.
It can be seen when someone takes part in an adventure program and builds confidence in what they can do. It can be seen when someone gains real-world experience through a social enterprise, develops work skills, or contributes as part of a team. It can be seen when people form friendships, find work, learn new skills and take part in everyday community life.
These are not extras. They are the practical experiences that help people belong.
But inclusion is not something government or providers can deliver alone. It takes a whole community.
Geelong’s business community has an important role to play. Local businesses can create real opportunities for people with disability through inclusive employment, procurement, work experience, volunteering, sponsorship, partnerships and support for social enterprises.
As the NDIS continues to evolve, we invite businesses to speak with us about how we can work together.
Whether it is employment, training, procurement, events, partnerships or community initiatives, there are practical ways you can make inclusion part of everyday practice.
Geelong has the experience, community spirit and partnerships to lead on inclusion.
Now is the time to make sure people with disability are not just supported, but really included.
