Committee for Geelong Welcomes New Board Leadership

The Committee for Geelong is proud to announce the appointment of Rebecca Bartel as Chair and Brett Winter as Deputy Chair, following the organisation’s 25th Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, 6 November 2025.

In a historic milestone for the organisation, Rebecca Bartel has been appointed Chair of the Committee for Geelong, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

As Executive Director, Strategic Partnerships at Deakin University, Rebecca brings more than 25 years’ experience across corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors, with expertise in strategy and risk, stakeholder engagement, commercialisation and governance.

A Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), Rebecca has served as Deputy Chair for the past four years and is passionate about regional resilience and achieving sustainable, inclusive growth for Geelong over the long term.

She is focused on designing Geelong’s best future through collaboration, strategic leadership and data-driven solutions that deliver real community and economic impact.

Rebecca’s leadership will be instrumental in guiding the Committee’s vision for a thriving, inclusive Geelong and ensuring Greater Geelong grows well, not just fast.

Joining her in leadership is Brett Winter, CEO of GeelongPort, who steps into the role of Deputy Chair.

Brett’s strong background in infrastructure and economic development, along with his commitment to regional growth and sustainability, aligns with the Committee’s strategic priorities.

A passionate advocate for Geelong’s long-term prosperity, Brett is committed to fostering collaboration between industry, government and community to ensure the region grows in a way that is inclusive, resilient and future-focused.

He recently concluded a term on the board of G21 – Geelong Region Alliance, where he played a key role in advancing regional priorities.

The Committee also welcomes the appointment of Richard Hill as Finance Audit and Risk Management Chair, having served on the Board for the past 3 years.

Rounding out the changes is the appointment of Barwon Health Chief Strategy Officer, Anna Burgess, as a new member of the Board.

Existing Board members Joe Ormeno, Paul Robson and Wes Self were re-elected to the Board at the AGM.

The appointments mark a new chapter for the Committee for Geelong, following the conclusion of Clive Pugh’s tenure as Chair and the retirement from the Board of Anne O’Loughlin.

CEO Michael Johnston said:

"Rebecca and Brett are exceptional leaders with a deep understanding of Geelong’s opportunities and challenges. Their combined expertise will strengthen our advocacy and impact across the region.

I look forward to continuing to lead the organisation under this new Board leadership and am excited to have such high calibre individuals supporting me in my role.”
