Hello Geelong,
I’m Tanya Bennett, Back to Back Theatre’s new Executive Producer and Co-CEO. For those who don’t know me yet, here’s a little about my journey so far.
For the past 18 years, I’ve been proud to call Geelong home. My path in the arts spans nearly three decades, including four years as Program Manager at Geelong Arts Centre and, for the past six years, various roles with Back to Back Theatre — one of Geelong’s most extraordinary cultural success stories.
Beyond the arts, my husband and I poured our hearts into local hospitality as proprietors of the Batesford Hotel and Botanical on Ryrie Café. Whatever the setting, my focus has always been on building community and creating spaces where imagination and connection thrive.
Back to Back Theatre is a shining example of what’s possible when creativity and community come together. Founded in Geelong in 1987, it has grown into one of Australia’s most daring and visionary theatre companies. What makes Back to Back distinct is its inclusive ensemble: people with intellectual disabilities play central roles in every project, creating work that is bold, uncompromising, and deeply human.
Over the decades, the company has performed in 106 cities across 29 countries, delivered workshops to over 34,000 participants, and received 23 national and international awards — including some of the world’s most significant arts honours. Most notably, in 2022 it won the International Ibsen Award — often called the Nobel Prize for theatre — and in 2024 received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre at the Venice Biennale, the equivalent of winning Olympic Gold in contemporary theatre.
I’m inspired by our history but even more excited about what lies ahead. My aim is to build on Back to Back’s legacy while broadening its reach, deepening its impact, and continuing to surprise both long-time audiences and newcomers.
Which brings me to two upcoming events I’d love to invite you to.
First, Gardening with Sex Toys, coming to Geelong Arts Centre this November. Gardening with Sex Toys is playful, provocative, and heartfelt, exploring intimacy, identity, and desire. It’s created by Theatre of Speed, our creative thinktank of community members who meet weekly to make bold new work.
Second, Charge! Agincourt, now showing at ACMI in Melbourne. Developed by our ensemble and community members as part of our Northside project, it’s an electrifying short film reimagining the Battle of Agincourt with cardboard sets and props — a witty, poignant meditation on history, truth, and legacy.
Whether you’re a long-time supporter, an occasional theatregoer, or simply curious, I hope you’ll join us. Come say hello — in a foyer, at a show, or through our community programs.
