Energy revolution is here

It is a tremendously exciting time at Viva Energy’s refinery in Corio, the core of the Geelong Energy Hub. We are currently working on a series of major development projects that will shape the direction of the refinery and secure Geelong’s important role in Australia’s energy future.

Over the next 18 months, we will complete three landmark projects funded with input from the Australian Government. These projects will support a fleet of zero-emission trucks and buses, deliver the cleanest petrol ever manufactured in Australia and contribute to the country’s fuel security – all while providing skilled employment and investing money into the local economy.

In September, we will commission our Strategic Diesel Storage tanks – three 30-million-litre tanks that will enhance Australia’s fuel security and build on our robust diesel supply for Victoria. People travelling to Melbourne by train will see these impressive tanks with their geodesic dome roofs as they pass through Corio Station.

Anyone passing our refinery on the Princes Highway can see the construction of our new energies service station. This is Australia’s most ambitious hydrogen mobility project, bringing together hydrogen refuelling and EV charging in what we hope will be the first in a network of outlets on Australia’s key road transport routes.

Set to open in early 2025, this service station will produce renewable hydrogen on-site, using renewable electricity and recycled water from Barwon Water’s Northern Water Plant. It will support a fleet of emissions-free heavy vehicles in Geelong, including CDC buses, Cleanaway rubbish trucks and trucks for Toll and Barwon Water.

This is a great example of the work we are doing to help our customers address their carbon footprint by taking high-carbon-intensity vehicles off the road and proving the practical application of hydrogen technology in a real-world environment.

We are also working on the construction of our Ultra Low Sulphur Gasoline plant, due for completion in late 2025, which will see Viva Energy deliver the cleanest petrol we have ever made – providing health and environmental benefits for all Australians. The foundations of this project are well advanced, with key pieces of equipment due for delivery in coming months.

Viva Energy is continuing to work on the approvals process for its proposed gas import terminal, which would play an important role in addressing the gas shortage forecast to impact south-eastern Australia in the coming years.

Once through the regulatory approval process and Final Investment Decision, this facility will bring vital gas into Victoria for heating households, sustaining manufacturing businesses and supporting the growth of our renewable energy future.

These developments all point to a promising future for the Geelong Energy Hub and the important role Geelong will play in securing the nation's fuel supply and advancing the energy transition. There are challenges ahead, but together we will build a cleaner, more resilient future for Australia.
