Get ready Geelong, the world is watching

2026 marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Geelong. With world-class events, vibrant waterfront development, and a continued growth in population and tourism on the horizon, our city is in a stronger position than ever to welcome the world to our doorstep. And there’s an opportunity for everyone to be part of it... if we're ready to.

Take the Victorian Sailing Centre, the final piece in stage one of Geelong’s Waterfront Safe Harbour Project. Backed by government at three levels, this new piece of infrastructure has already transformed our foreshore into a hub capable of hosting national and international sailing regattas. In its first year of opening this summer, five major sailing events will take place on Corio Bay, culminating in Festival of Sails from January 24-26.

The festival this year will host a Made in Geelong Artisan Market, Showcase Stage, and Classic Car Showcase, deepening connection with locals and businesses at every level. Not only does this bring sailing into the community, but it also celebrates and strengthens the ties Australia’s oldest sporting event has to our automotive history at an international level.

The TLC Healthcare Etchells Australasian World Championship running from 2026-2028 will work as the perfect lead-in event to the Etchells World Championship in 2029, bringing exceptional talent from around the world to our city and elevating Geelong’s position on the international sailing map.

Opportunities are extending away from sport as well. The opening of the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre this year adds a platform for national and international conferences, blending culture, business, and leisure.

Geelong’s event economy is thriving, delivering $93 million in 2024–25, with Festival of Sails alone contributing more than $8 million. And Greater Geelong this year overtook Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as the most popular regional home for people leaving capital cities.

For locals and businesses, this is the moment to take hold of opportunities unfolding across Geelong, and not just for our own means. The more we connect with community authentically and meaningfully, the more we create a vibrant, interconnected city that thrives economically and socially. These opportunities bring people together, foster community pride, and provide opportunities for everyone to connect with visitors in meaningful ways, creating experiences that are memorable, rewarding, and repeatable.

But the true success of these opportunities depends on all of us working together. Businesses that embrace the moment, connect with the community, and actively participate in the life of the city will thrive. Those that don’t risk being left behind.

By collaborating, engaging, and embracing the momentum, we can ensure Geelong not only hosts the world, but leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.
