Next month, like thousands of Australians, I’ll be putting down the glass and picking up a cause that means a great deal to me.
I’m proud to say I’ve joined ‘Billy’s Team Love,’ as part of Dry July, led by none other than Geelong legend, Billy Brownless. Together, we’re taking on Dry July with purpose, raising vital funds to support Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre and Cancer Services, right here in our own backyard.
This cause is deeply personal, it’s close to home. Like so many in our region, I’ve seen the impact cancer can have. Not just on those diagnosed, but on the families, friends, neighbours and colleagues who walk the journey beside them. It’s a disease that doesn’t discriminate, and its effects are felt through entire communities.
That’s why the work of the Andrew Love Cancer Centre is so profoundly important. When someone walks through their doors, they’re not just a patient. They’re a person, surrounded by a team that truly cares. Whether it's the precision of radiation therapy, endless chemotherapy sessions, or the reassurance of the wellness centre team, the support offered is all-encompassing.
They treat the whole person, body, mind and spirit. And they stand beside not just the individual, but their family and support networks too. It’s this kind of compassionate, community-driven care that makes the Andrew Love Cancer Centre special.
As CEO of the Committee for Geelong, I see the incredible work that Barwon Health does every day, not just in cancer care but across the full spectrum of health services. As the largest employer across our region, and one of the host comprehensive health services across the nation, our local health service is here for everyone, whether young or old and regardless of backgrounds. And in a time where community matters more than ever, supporting institutions like Barwon Health isn’t just a gesture, it’s a responsibility.
These are exciting times for our region, with innovation, growth, and development reshaping our future. But Geelong’s unique community’s strength will always be measured by how we look after each other, especially in times of need. That’s why I’m encouraging everyone in Geelong and our surrounds to get behind the Andrew Love Cancer Centre through Dry July. Whether you sign up yourself, make a donation, or simply share the message, your support makes a difference.
Let’s rally behind Billy’s Team Love, support the incredible staff at Barwon Health, and most importantly, stand with the people in our community affected by cancer. Because when we support our local health service, we’re investing in a healthier, stronger, and more compassionate Geelong.
It’s about more than just abstaining from alcohol for a month, it’s about the health of local people.
