TAFE: The data is clear and it’s time to change perceptions

What if I told you that TAFE graduates have employment rates almost identical to university graduates? Or that they earn, on average, more straight after graduation? Or that 80% of future jobs can be reached through a TAFE education?

This isn’t speculation—it’s hard data. The latest research confirms what those of us in the sector already know: TAFE is not a second-choice option—it’s a pathway to real, well-paying, and future-proofed careers. Yet, despite the evidence, outdated perceptions persist, holding young Australians back from opportunities that are not only available, but in high demand.

Recent research highlights there is a perception around TAFE that needs to be addressed. Many still assume TAFE leads to lower employment outcomes. The reality is, that TAFE graduates (78%) are just as likely to be employed as university graduates (79%). There is also a belief that TAFE graduates earn less, however those with a Certificate IV or higher earn a similar median salary to university graduates.

Traditionally, TAFE has been viewed as only for trades, however there are over 150 courses offered such as nursing, cyber security, business, finance, and advanced manufacturing—industries shaping the future economy.

Victoria’s skills crisis is no secret, the demand for skilled workers is higher than ever.

Employers are searching for job-ready workers, and an impressive 67% of Victoria’s job shortages can be addressed through TAFE pathways. By 2026, 9 in 10 new jobs will require post-school education, and 80% of future jobs will be attainable via TAFE.

TAFE provides a faster, more direct route into jobs in-demand, offering Practical, hands-on training, Industry-aligned qualifications, and fast-tracked employment pathways.

At The Gordon, we see the impact of this every day.

In 2024 alone, 11,500 students trusted us to help build their futures, including 3,800 apprentices and trainees already contributing to Geelong’s workforce. More than 1,900 students accessed Free TAFE, removing financial barriers, unlocking real career opportunities and opening doors for more Victorians to access a high-quality, low-cost, and job-ready education.

The Victorian Government is investing heavily in TAFE, recognising that a strong skills pipeline is critical to the state’s economic future. Beyond funding, we must rethink the ]way we talk about education options. University works for some, but for many, TAFE offers a better, faster, and more affordable route to a stable, well-paid career.

The data is in. The demand is clear. If we want a skilled, job-ready workforce, we must change the conversation—now.

At The Gordon, we are ready. Are you?
